If you’re keen to personalise every aspect of your big day your wedding cake can be just as much a part of your wedding theme as your dress, favours, flowers and decorations.

We asked Peggy, from legendary Peggy Porschen Cakes , for her thoughts on wedding cake trends for 2013:

“There is certainly a trend towards the traditional tiered cake; brides are opting for elegant and understated designs which display detailed craftsmanship and skill. Flowers of course remain very popular; I find a lot of brides ask for a bouquet of different blooms as opposed to one flower and one colour. I love to design cakes that combine both fresh flowers and sugar flowers."

Here are a few other trends that will be big in the world of wedding cakes in 2013...

Vintage wedding cakes

Vintage weddings are going to remain popular in 2013 with trends for wedding cakes following suit. Whether you would like your cake wrapped in a bow or iced with an intricate lace detail, vintage wedding cakes are sure to catch the eye of all wedding guests. Why not also try a cake that is adorned with iced pinstripes for a 1920s touch, or even pretty flowers for a 1950s vibe?

Cakes that match the season

An up-and-coming idea for 2013 is matching the wedding cake with the season:

  • Spring: Spring is fresh, delicate and pretty. You could add an Springtime or Easter theme to your cake by taking inspiration from birds, feathers, nests, eggs, bunnies etc. or spring flowers like daffodils.
  • Summer: Full of vivid colour and beautiful blooms, Summer flowers could inspire your cake decoration, or you could have a different type of cake such as a cheesecake.
  • Autumn: Autumn is the time of the harvest with leaves on the trees turning, gold, burnt orange and bronze. Your cake could feature autumn colours, fruits, nuts, berries, or even pumpkins for a Halloween theme.
  • Winter: A traditional fruit cake with winter white icing and lots of icy sparkles would look magical for a Winter wedding.

You can also tailor your wedding cake to suit your wedding venue.

Hand painted cakes

Hand painted cakes are beautiful, unusual and will leave a lasting impression on your wedding guests. Painted with pretty, delicate flowers, hand painted cakes often look like fine china however; you could opt for a design completely personal to you.

Mint colour theme

Mint green is expected to be a big colour theme for 2013 weddings. Even if mint is not your main colour you could pair it with shades of pale yellow or pink for a sweet pastel theme that looks good enough to eat.
