‘I actually asked Alex to re-do the proposal, as first time around I was in my dressing gown!” laughs Cat. So, loving boyfriend Alex took Cat on a road trip to the place the couple had always pictured getting married and got down on one knee – again!
A hidden gem
With the perfect proposal made official, Alex and Cat began to plan the wedding of their dreams, booked for just seven months’ time. “The first thing we did was ensure our nearest and dearest could make the date. We put a deposit down on a venue but shortly changed our minds when we saw that Bassmead Manor Barns was almost ready for its first wedding,’ says Cat. A rustic, inviting venue, which could accommodate both ceremony and evening celebrations, was one thing that was really important to Cat and Alex. It was just one of the reasons they booked Bassmead Manor Barns. “We fell in love with Bassmead straight away. The entire place was beautiful. Our follow-up visit with Becky the co-ordinator left us in no doubt that she would handle everything!” explains Cat.
Despite the limited time the couple had to plan, Cat took advantage of all things bridal, flicking through wedding magazines, attending wedding shows and frequently browsing the web for top local wedding suppliers. She decided a vintage shabby chic look would complement the feel of the venue and fit well with her personal style. So the couple began to create their perfect vision with roses, hessian fabric, bunting, scrabble pieces, tin pots and an old fashioned post-box for cards. “Hobbycraft was really useful for our stationery, and Amazon and eBay also had some perfect items at great prices,” says Cat.
With a gorgeous, delicate theme in mind, it was only right that Cat choose a wedding dress to match. “I didn’t get the wow feeling trying most of the dresses on that I imagined I’d choose and started to panic with only a few months to go. However, I eventually found an elegant halter-neck style ivory dress that happened to be on the sale rail. I later had customised by Julie at Sew & Sew, she managed to turn my pretty dress into a stunning one. She altered it to fit, added lace all over the bodice, added ruches, as well as a beautiful lace back with a subtle heart effect,” explains Cat. Cat teamed her dress with beautiful flowers and accessories, including roses in her hair, rose and white gold jewellery and ivory peep toe shoes. Alex’s attire complemented Cat’s pretty look. He chose a grey suit, ivory shirt and soft peach toned hankies and ties.
The perfect day
On the morning of their July wedding, the couple woke to bright skies and warm temperatures, setting the scene for their beautiful day ahead. “We had a civil ceremony in the old Rickety Barn with string quartet versions of some more current songs, and readings from two close friends of mine,” recalls Cat. One of the readings was a poem Cat had written for Alex, the other was one of the couple’s favourite wedding readings, Love is a Temporary Madness.
Food glorious food
A delicious wedding breakfast followed, including a goat’s cheese starter, lamb main and passion fruit tart dessert. Guests were also treated to a feast in the evening when yet more delicious food was served with a hog roast and the couple’s wedding cake. “The catering was our biggest splurge but it was worth every penny. We had so many compliments on the choice and standard of the food served. It not only looked amazing, it tasted amazing too!” smiles Cat.
Wedding play list
With music being a big part of Alex and Cat’s lives, a live band was a must. “We found a band via Earcandy called The Somebodys. We were so impressed with them. Everyone had a good boogie in the evening and didn’t want them to finish,” says Cat. The band also played the couple’s first dance song, Stolen Dance, by Milky Chance. “We wanted to come up with a fun routine but left it to the last minute with various other things planned. We ended up doing a slow dance but did add a silly twist at times!” laughs Cat. “If we could do it all again we wouldn’t change much at all. It really was a perfect day,” she adds.
Cat’s top tips
- Choose your venue and suppliers wisely – they make a huge difference to the whole feel and smooth-running of your big day
- Do look at the sale rails as sometimes the perfect size and style could be there waiting. I got my dress and the bridesmaid’s dresses on sale!
- Treat yourself to getting your hair and make-up done professionally. Boe at Botias Hair & Make-up was so creative. It really makes a difference in the photographs, and also gives you a chance to sit and relax before it’s all go
