Emma received an extra special treat for her 24th birthday, a proposal from boyfriend Adam. “I didn’t see it coming at all. Adam presented me with a wooden puzzle cube, surrounded with pictures of us. Inside he had carved one of the wooden blocks out, and the ring was sitting in it beautifully as I turned the puzzle to the next page,” recalls Emma.
Within two months, the couple’s wedding planning was in full swing, and Bartholomew Barn was booked. “The venue was so beautiful, there were lots of areas for different shots and we’d never been to a wedding there before,” smiles Emma. Taking advantage of the gorgeous venue and location was extremely important to Emma and Adam – hence a great photographer was a real wedding must have! “Choosing our photographer was hard. It was a tough decision as photography was very important to the both of us. We found our photographer at a wedding fayre and adored her style and pictures. It was our biggest splurge but well worth it!” explains Emma. The couple’s other suppliers were all booked via recommendations from friends and through browsing local suppliers on the internet.
Pretty and chic
Adam and Emma decided upon a pretty paper and teatime theme. For the centrepieces, they made origami flowers and placed them in teapots. They also named the tables after types of tea and offered up personalised teabags to guests for their wedding favours. To fit in with the vintage teatime theme, Emma choose a lace, strapless, A-line Justin Alexander dress, complemented by a veil and a material and gem headband. Her four bridesmaids wore silver knee length dresses with purple shoes, accessories and pashminas. The dresses were finished off with a band around the waist that matched Emma’s gown. “The suits were our biggest wedding saving, we got a great deal on them,” says Emma. Her groom and his groomsmen wore dark grey tailed suits with cream waistcoats, silver ties and purple socks and buttonholes. “Adam looked amazing. He suited the look so well!” she adds.
With two years of careful planning behind them, it was time for the couple to celebrate their big day finally. On 24th May 2014, Adam and Emma tied the knot in a civil ceremony at Bartholomew Barn. “The ceremony was just lovely; it was so personal. I had my mum and dad walk me down the aisle and two readings from family,” recalls Emma.
Good friends, good food, good times
The couple and their guests celebrated the occasion with a feast of fine food. Adam and Emma choose eight different canapés for their drinks reception, to be enjoyed with sparkling wine and Pimms, and for their wedding breakfast they chose a chicken main and a trio of desserts. “We had great speeches to accompany the food,” laughs Emma. “My dad’s speech was lovely, and the best men were so funny,” she adds.
The perfect getaway
To follow the wedding breakfast the couple had an evening reception with a DJ providing all the music for the night. Inspired by Adam’s favourite film, Back to the Future, the two shared their first dance to the iconic sound track song, Earth Angel, before partying with the rest of their family and friends. “After our big day we went on honeymoon to Riviera Maya in Mexico. It was so beautiful - the best holiday ever,” smiles Emma.

- Don’t stress about your wedding day – enjoy it!
- Big weddings aren’t always ideal. They can take a lot of your time and energy think carefully about what you want from your day
- Consider a shorter engagement. We had a two-year engagement, which meant a very long time of talking about the wedding. If we could have done it again, we’d probably have got married sooner.
