10 Amazing Boho Wedding Ideas

Tap into the shabby chic, informal trend and follow our guide to creating the perfect boho wedding.

From selecting the perfect dress, makeup, hair, flowers, décor, wedding breakfast and finishing flourishes, our guide will ensure that your big day is nothing less than perfect.

1. The Boho Bride

You should always choose a wedding dress to suit you rather than your wedding style. However, a bohemian wedding is not the time to wear a highly structured, sequin encrusted dress. Think hippy, think feminine and dream of wandering through fields of wild flowers with your new beau. That’s the dress you’re after. It should lack formality, but ooze romance. Full skirts (long or short) are perfect, as is a touch of vintage style, perhaps in the form of lace or swathes of chiffon.

2. Shoes and Accessories

When it comes to shoes, go barefoot or find the prettiest flats - you can’t climb on hay bales in Jimmy Choo’s! Keep accessories to a minimum, taking the floral option wherever possible. When it comes to your beautiful boho style dress, it’s important not to over-accessorise.

3. Boho Blooms

Your flowers should look like they’ve just been gathered from a sumptuous summer garden. Continue the theme by wearing flowers in your hair – whether it’s an adorable crown or an elaborate hairpiece. Alas, creating this style isn’t a case of simply sticking a gerbera in your hair and holding a loose bunch of flowers. Find a talented florist to work their magic.

When it comes to floral décor, use a selection of vessels to hold your arrangements. Glass jars, planters and vintage jugs are all easy to find and relatively inexpensive. The boho wedding isn’t about perfection and co-ordination so it doesn’t matter if your vessels don’t match, so long as your overall look is the same throughout.

4. The Perfect Venue

A truly bohemian wedding has to make the most of the great outdoors. When looking for the ideal venue, the most important element is the garden and a suitable inside space if the weather is inclement. Orangeries and marquees are just the thing, allowing you to bring the outside in. If your venue allows, teepees make an idyllic setting for a wedding. Large teepees are wonderful for celebrations, and you can even have them set up for overnight accommodation, spending your first night under the stars.

5. Time to Dine

Dining should be as informal as the wedding style, so scrap any thoughts of a wedding breakfast that is served to the table. Food stalls are the perfect catering solution for a boho wedding, enabling your guests to choose what they’d like to eat from a selection of tasty options. As the sun goes down, have an outdoor fire pit and satisfy any hunger cravings with a simple, beautifully cooked barbecue, or colourful salads and cheeses.

6. Pleased as Punch

For drinks, serve punch from large glass punch bowls, making sure to offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Serve in pretty, colourful glasses, perhaps adorned with edible flowers. You might even choose to offer a home brewed beer as a fun talking point!

7. Let Them Eat Cake

When choosing your wedding cake, veer away from a traditional white-tiered cake and opt for a naked cake adorned with delicious red fruits and flowers. Alternatively, if you don’t have a sweet tooth, offer a cheese tower and baskets of beautiful fresh bread.

8. Décor and Style

The boho wedding is super stylish without being ‘try hard’. Your look should appear effortless. Use the great outdoors as much as you can – adorning tables with flowers that have a ‘just picked’ look. Keep all products natural – menus printed on brown paper, homemade jams or cookies for favours and napkins tied with raffia. The bohemian style laughs in the face of order, so don’t worry at all if decorations don’t match.

Furniture can be equally rustic, perhaps trestle tables and wooden folding chairs or benches, with bales of hay for guests to sit on in a chill out area.

9. Lighting

As with all weddings, lighting should be well considered to add a romantic hue in the evening. The boho wedding lends itself perfectly to fairy lights and lanterns hanging from the trees.

10. Entertainment

This is a fun wedding, from start to finish! It’s romantic and lively and you’re all going to have a great time. Consider that the music should be as ‘natural’ as the environment. During the ceremony, you might choose a harpist to accompany you down the aisle. A live band playing fiddles can really set the scene for an outdoor evening party, and why not throw in some festival style with performers to delight your guests – fire eaters would be wonderful!
