Fun In The Sun: 8 Ways to Keep Your Guests Entertained Outdoors

If you’re tying the knot in the summer and have a wedding venue with outdoor space, be sure to make the most a sunny day!

From fairground rides to fireworks, we help you entertain your guests in the great outdoors with these fun ideas.

1. Personalised Cocktails

An outdoor drinks reception is one of the most wonderful moments of a summer wedding. Be sure to offer plenty of refreshments to your guests in the form of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks served alongside a selection of tasty canapés. Add a little theatre by setting up a cocktail bar and serving your bespoke wedding cocktail, named to suit you. If you have a number of younger guests, why not give them the option to do the same (minus the alcohol of course!).

2. Food, Glorious Food

If space allows, take the opportunity to dine outside. If you’re having a sit-down wedding breakfast, chances are this will be inside, but the evening can be a little less formal. Ask your chosen caterer about options. Barbecues and fire pits are popular choice for couples looking to make the most of the venues outdoor space, as is afternoon tea or a hog roast. Alternatively, why not splash out on some exciting food stations, creating a festival atmosphere? Be inspired by top caterers, Galloping Gourmet, who revel in creating elegant food stations offering anything from Turkish Meze to the Best of British dishes.

3. Outdoor Games – not just for kids!

Pre or post-wedding breakfast can be a perfect time to introduce some outdoor games and a sweeping lawn just cries out for a game of rounders, croquet or cricket. Be sure to consider the ages of your guests – catering for children if you have a number of younger guests. Treasure hunts are always popular, as are ‘giant’ games such as Jenga or Connect Four. Don’t forget a few token prizes for your winners and plenty of refreshments!

4. Photobooth Fun

Make the most of the sunshine by taking photographs outside. Having a photobooth at a wedding is always great fun and if it can be set up outside you’ll get some wonderful shots. Plan a fun basket of props, perhaps with a theme and set up an open-sided gazebo to allow for any unexpected drops of rain, or to offer a little shade.

5. Light Up the Sky

Fireworks make a wonderful addition to a wedding day, and they’re a fabulous finale for a summer celebration. On a practical note, always check with your venue before contacting a firework company to be sure that they can be accommodated. Make your firework moment extra special by serving warming drinks or cocktails to your guests while they watch and provide a selection of shawls for ladies to throw over their shoulders.

6. The Fun of the Fair

We’re never too old for fairground rides, so bring the celebrations to your wedding. Go all out by hiring dodgems, waltzers and even a Ferris wheel or, keep things simple and costs down by hiring just one ride and setting up a wonderful candy floss stall! As an alternative to rides, enchant your guests with entertainers from magicians and look-a-likes to acrobats and fire-eaters.

7. Time to Dance

If your venue allows, keep your celebrations going in to the early hours by having a band play outside. Chances are noise restrictions might mean you have to keep the music inside, but you can still enjoy outdoor music during the day with musicians offering entertainment during welcome drinks.

8. Get Active

Couples having a multi-day wedding can really make the most of their outdoor space. Investigate what activities are available for you and your guests. Venues such as Lemore Manor offer an abundance of exciting adventures both on and off site, from golfing and fishing to archery, football and painting classes.
