Honeymooning at Niyama in the Maldives

The Maldivian island Niyama is a luxury wonderland that's perfect for couples who want to be washed up on a desert island castaway-style, but with all the trimmings of a modern and chic hotel.

Ah, the Maldives, a luxury honeymoon destination that needs little introduction. The sea is as clear as a gem stone and the beaches are preened to perfection. The Maldivian island Niyama is a luxury wonderland that's perfect for couples who want to be washed up on a desert island castaway-style, but with all the trimmings of a modern and chic hotel. Having spent time on the island this summer, here’s how Original Travel’s Helen would spend her honeymoon there.

1. Visit the 24 hour spa

The secret formula to a honeymoon? Regain your energy post-wedding before picking up the pace again. The LIME Spa at Niyama is open 24 hours a day and has and over water treatment room with couples’ massage beds that look straight onto the ocean. I would also indulge in post-wedding pick me up in the form of an Intraceuticals facial treatment, which rumour has it is used by Kim Kardashian.

2. A sunrise Dhoni cruise

I love to wake-up early and have the whole day ahead of me so I would make the most of the glorious sunshine and take a sunrise Dhoni cruise around island. A champagne breakfast is served as you look across to amazing views of the island.

3. Dine in the tree tops at The Nest

New for 2015 is Niyama's restaurant high up in the leafy tree tops. It's perfect for a super sophisticated honeymoon date, with a touch of Tarzan and Jane thrown in (minus the scary rope swings over crocodile pits). As you ascend into the tree tops, you notice how well the tables are placed for total privacy and the moody lighting makes the place feel very covert. The Nest serves Asian specialities from Thai to Teppanyaki and don't forget to order some plum sake at the end of your meal. If, like me, you make the mistake of ordering a whole bottle, (because it was just so delicious), then you'll find a buggy waiting to escort you home for the evening.

4. Take a long soak in a supersized bath tub

For many, the attraction of the Maldives is being able to jump straight into the sea from an overwater villa. At Niyama the overwater villas are top notch but the beach suites are also hiding a very special secret: huge open air bathrooms with waterfall showers, giant bath tubs and all the toiletries a girl could wish for. Total bliss.

5. Chill and play, play and chill

Niyama is spread across two islands: Play and Chill. Fancy a day's scuba diving with Seb at the water sports centre? Then head to Play. Or maybe you’re both in need of some morning yoga? Then head to Chill. For active couples who think that a Maldivian island might give them cabin fever, there's no chance of this at Niyama; there's just so much to explore.

6. Pop ‘til I drop

All couples will have a popcorn machine in your room, a plasma screen TV and a library full of movies. I would curl up after dinner with the sound of the sea just metres away.

7. Personalised service

Looking for complete privacy on your honeymoon? The team at Niyama will even invite you to share your personal preferences ahead of arrival via a portal that records your taste in pillows, wine, food and service style. Leaving you more time to spend ensconced in your super luxurious suite.
