July. The sun is shining, strawberries are in season and it’s Pimm’s o’clock pretty much all the time. What better setting for a country wedding? And where there are weddings there are honeymoons, which is where we come in.
Puglia may not be the first region to spring to mind when you think of a romantic Italian honeymoon (Venice, anyone?) but this relatively undiscovered area offers all the beauty, gastronomy and culture of the more popular places, but without the crowds. Meander through the streets of historic towns like Ostuni, Lecce and Locorotondo, taking in the beautiful architecture, feasting on gelato and sipping Prosecco. For those who like a road trip, head down to the coastal town of Leuca on the southern tip of Italy and spend the day working your way back up the windy, cliff-side coast road admiring the staggering views as you go, stopping off in pretty villages to gorge on fresh seafood and take a dip in the startlingly clear azure waters. Or simply relax in the comfort of one of Europe’s best hotels, Borgo Egnazia.
Again, probably not the first destination that springs to mind when you think of a honeymoon but Madagascar is, quite simply, one of the coolest countries on the planet. First there’s the wildlife, a whopping 80% of which is endemic to the island. Anyone interested in a safari honeymoon will be blown away by what Madagascar has to offer… and who doesn’t love a lemur? It gets better (surely not?!), Madagascar is also home to some truly beautiful hotels and beaches for that all-important post-wedding R&R. Tsarabanjina is something of a honeymoon haven sitting just off the north coast, it’s 25 bungalows are dotted along the picture-perfect white sand beach and each have uninterrupted views across the ocean. Simply chill on the beach and relax in the spa, or get active with tennis, snorkelling, diving or sailing.
Brazil’s sensual rhythm and vast array of sights make it the perfect honeymoon destination during July. With over 4,500 miles of coastline it boasts some of the world’s best beaches while the majestic Iguazu Falls, the mighty Amazon River and the mysterious table topped mountains of Chapada Diamantina are fairly easy on the eyes too. And that’s before we’ve even mentioned Rio, a city whose legendary status is entirely deserved and whose heady atmosphere is virtually impossible to not become intoxicated by. All this, coupled with a lovely collection of sophisticated boutique hotels, is a recipe for a truly memorable July honeymoon.
Indonesia has long been a favourite with Original Travel clients for luxury honeymoons. And what’s more, it enjoys its best weather during our summer so July is the perfect time to go. Of the 17,000-odd islands in the Indonesian archipelago, Bali and Lombok are the top picks for romantic luxury honeymoons. Offering all kinds of cultural attractions, beautiful beaches and scenic landscapes of terraced hills, these tropical, volcanic islands are the most popular in Indonesia for good reason. If you do feel the need to head more off the beaten track on your honeymoon, the neighbouring island of Sumba is home to one of our all-time favourite hotels, Nihiwatu. Nestled amongst tropical rainforest and overlooking a private beach, honeymooners will feel completely away from it all.
