After dreaming of a proposal for a long while, Nicola got everything she wished for one summer’s evening in July. “Kirk enlisted the help of our two year old son to pop the question. I was presented with a beautiful diamond platinum ring and couldn’t say yes fast enough!” smiles Nicola.
With plans for a perfect wedding, the couple decided to set a date two years in advance, giving them plenty of time to plan and save for their special day. “The most important thing to us was to do everything exactly how we wanted. Our must haves were good food, an amazing photographer and a videographer. We were keen to have all those precious moments captured beautifully,” explains Nicola. She also started building her ideas on Pinterest and regularly logged on to Rock My Wedding to get the latest inspiration.
The first main task the couple tackled was the venue. They stumbled across the Mythe Barn website by chance and fell in love with the venue the moment they saw it. “It was the most beautifully restored barn I’d ever seen and we adore the countryside location. I’ll always remember the moment we were shown around - we knew it was the venue for us,” smiles Nicola.
The couple were keen that their big-day décor accentuated the style of the venue, so they opted for a rustic theme with a hint of sparkle. “Throughout the styling we kept things as natural as possible, using manila card for anything we had printed and rustic props such as a suitcase and crate for cards,” says Nicola. They styled the ceremony rooms with hurricane glasses filled with rose petals and candles, opted for jam jars filled with blooms for their table centrepieces and left favours of sunflower seeds and scratchcards for their guests. A scrumptious chocolate naked sponge cake decorated with roses finished off the couple’s rustic vibe. “I wanted the wedding to be as homemade as possible. As we had such a long engagement we were able to make this a reality. We made the favours, decorated jam jars with hessian, lace and twine and made our table names using bark and chalk pens,” explains Nicola.
Runway to reception
Nicola and Kirk’s love of all things simple and chic was reflected in their choice of outfits for the day. Nicola opted for an elegant, sparkly Kenneth Winston gown with a dropped waist and floaty tulle skirt – the first dress she tried on. Kirk chose a navy blue three-piece suit from Next, while the couple’s son, Charlie, wore a miniature version of the same suit. “We colour matched the ties to the blush bridesmaids dresses which really complemented the look. I had five bridesmaids and they all looked so pretty in their elegant dresses,” says Nicola.
They couple’s autumnal wedding was held in The Grain Store at Mythe Barn. “It was such a light and open room. With the sun shining outside it was simply perfect,” smiles Nicola. Choosing the right ceremony music was key to the pair. Nicola walked down the aisle to How Long Will I Love You, by Ellie Goulding, Little Things, by One Direction was played during the signing of the register, and the couple exited as man and wife to Lovely Day by Kathryn Oestenburgs. “I really did love our music choices,” adds Nicola.
When it came to the reception the wedding party indulged in a delicious three-course dinner. In the evening they were entertained by musical trio Adam Thomas & the Souljers. “Our leek and potato soup, burgundy chicken and sticky toffee pudding was to die for! The service was impeccable from start to finish,” says Nicola. “Our evening entertainment also exceeded our expectations. Everyone was on their feet dancing and having a good time,” she smiles.
Nicola’s top tips:
- Create a spreadsheet of your anticipated spend including your must haves and wants. Make sure you can afford to save the necessary amount every month.
- Do splurge on a photographer and videographer. The costs may seem high but it really is worth it. Our photos and video hold the memories we will treasure forever.
- Do spend quality time together at the reception. The moment we let go of each other’s hands we were surrounded by people who wanted to talk to us.
