With the average UK wedding costing more than £20,000, there is no question that arranging your wedding is a significant financial investment.

Here at Country House Wedding Venues, we have asked a selection of our past brides to share their cost-cutting secrets that you can steal for your big day, without compromising on fun, style or sophistication.

1. Travel

From venue to reception, car hire can be costly. Some of our brides saved money by having the ceremony and reception at the same venue. Another way to save money on hire is to use your own car, or maybe your ‘something borrowed’ can be a friend or family member’s car?

2. DIY

Getting the craft scissors and glue out of the drawer is no longer just for children, it is a serious business and the ultimate cost-cutting life saver. From invitations to table centre pieces, the list is endless on what you can make at the kitchen table to perfectly personalise your wedding venue. Get the glitter and glue guns at the ready and get your DIY on…

3. Time

The more time that you have to plan a wedding the more opportunities you may find to grab a bargain. Look out for venue and catering discount and end-of season dress sales.

4. Cakes

Some of our brides ditched the traditional three-tiered cake and opted for having cupcakes, as a cute alternative that make a big impact– and just as delicious.

Others decided to skip the cake tradition entirely and put the money into upgrading the food served at the reception.

5. Flowers

From our bridal survey, some brides got their ‘horti’ hands at the ready and styled their own luxury bouquets, while others snubbed the florists in favour of the supermarket.

6. Groom styling

Sorry boys, but when it comes to styling the groom it doesn’t need to cost nearly as much as the wedding dress. To complete the look, go high street for ties and accessories. Some of our couples rented their groomswear, because at the end of the day, how many opportunities are you going to get to wear a tailor-made kilt?
