The checklist: 18 things you'll wish you'd known about wedding planning before you got married

The checklist: 18 things you'll wish you'd known about wedding planning before you got married | CHWV

Hindsight can be a nightmare. From the not quite right photos of the big day to that guest you wish you hadn’t invited. Fear not, we’re on hand with our many years of expertise to ensure you don’t have any wedding regrets.

Ensure your wedding day is one to remember, for all the right reasons, with our handy pre-wedding checklist…

1. Create a budget and priority list. It will save you a lot of stress!

Dedicating a realistic amount of money to spend on your wedding is key if you want to avoid all those money-saving stresses. Put aside a certain amount of money every month and decide how and where you want to spend your money. Splurge on things that are high on your priority list – such as your honeymoon and venue, and save on things that you might consider to be less important, for example, your favours.

2. It’s your day, so do it your way

It’s common to feel under pressure to live up to friend’s and family expectations and / or tradition. But these are not the sort of memories you’ll want tainting your big-day. If you don’t want a three-course sit down meal, or you can’t think of anything worse than doing a first dance, don’t be afraid to buck the trend. Whatever you choose everyone will eventually come around to it.

3. You don’t need to do everything at once…

Once you’re engaged it’s easy to turn into a bridezilla, thinking you must plan every element of your wedding right away. Take your time and plan a long engagement if that’s what’s right for you. Focus on the priorities – sorting the venue and date – and let the rest fall into place.

4. …but do make a list for each thing once you begin planning it

When you get into the swing of wedding planning it’s a good idea to make lists. Guest lists, family gift lists, your gift list, wedding ideas and so on. Taking time to think about each element will help you to get it right.

5. Think carefully about your bridesmaid choices

Your bridesmaids not only have a big impact on the atmosphere of your day, they also influence the wedding planning process and will be in your wedding photos in years to come. Never choose your maids on a whim, or feel pressured to choose more than you’re comfortable with. Think about what qualities you want from a bridesmaid and choose accordingly.

6. Don’t take things too seriously

You will fall out, argue or disagree with at least one person during the wedding planning process. It’s inevitable! To minimise the risk of this, try taking a step back and stop worrying about what others might think of your choices and decisions. It’s only one day – and should be a happy one at that!
