A beautiful summer’s wedding in hot, hopefully dry July, should naturally be followed by being whisked away to an exotic escape in August. Here are some of the romantic getaways that we think are just perfect for that August honeymoon.
Montenegro has a special sort of charm about it, as though it was put together by magic. Pack a picnic and find a secluded spot surrounded by olive groves and heavily scented pinewoods, whilst gazing at Montenegro’s impressive black mountains and dramatic cobalt blue fjords. Or, take a boat out, dip into the transparent waters and explore the secret rocky caves of Montenegro hidden amongst the endless stretches of white sandy beaches.
Stay at the Aman Sveti Stefan; made up of picturesque limestone cottages that are only accessible via a maze of narrow cobbled lanes, in a car-free village. Here, they hang lanterns in the bedroom windows, in light of an age old romantic tradition. The island used to be a fishing village, and when the fishermen went out to sea, the wives would place the lanterns in their windows to guide their husband’s home at night. Rather romantic really.
Ladakh seems to be completely off the radar of any luxury traveller, which is why we think that it’s the perfect honeymoon destination. Ladakh is isolated from all the stresses of the frantic wedding world. You’ll be surrounded by fast flowing rivers, green valleys and turquoise glacial lakes with Pashmino goats settled against the snow-capped Himalayas. You’ll wonder why not more people have discovered Ladakh’s romantic charm.
Stay at Chemba Camp Thiksey, the first Indian ‘glamping’ experience. With each tent having its own en-suite, hot shower, fine linen, stunning views and its own butler, it’s hardly anything like camping! Why not wake up early to see the morning misty haze over the Kumovoni hills and enjoy some freshly brewed coffee, just the two of you.
Experience the real African ‘bush’ on a riding safari in the Masai Mara plains. August is also the perfect month to be in Kenya as you will most likely get to see the great migration. Swim under waterfalls, and then settle down for a quiet sundowner, wrapped up in a blanket, watching the sunset over the most iconic African scene with and G&T in hand, of course.
Wake up the next day to the sight of elephants bathing in the river from the comfort of your lodge. In a setting just like ‘Out of Africa,’ you’ll not only be enjoying marital bliss, but falling in love with Africa.
At Ol Seki, they particularly focus on Ectourism, and plant an indigenous tree for every guest that visits their camp. What a romantic way to leave Kenya, with a perfect reason to go back and visit again.
What sounds more romantic than honeymooning in the place that inspired so many amazing Hollywood romantic movies; California. With LA and San Francisco, vineyards and dramatic national parks, you certainly will not be bored! The Big Sur Road Trip and Yosemite National Park are both particular favourites of ours. The Big Sur consists of a 90 mile long stretch of redwood and fog-trimmed waterfront between Carmel by the Sea and Hearst Castle.
One of few places to stay along the Big Sur is the Post Ranch Inn, settled into the cliffs the building is designed to blend in with its particular surroundings, with grass covered roofs and other quirky touches. The honeymoon packages at Post Ranch Inn offer strawberries dipped in chocolate, stargazing as well as whale watching from your bed. The Big Sur has so many special places that will draw you in with their magical allure. We’re sold.
