6 Questions To Ask When Choosing Your Wedding Shoes

Your bridal shoes not only need to be jaw-droppingly beautiful, but also a pleasure to be worn.

When choosing your wedding shoes, there are many things you have to consider. Knowing these qualifiers, and bearing them in mind as you shop, will allow you to make a well-informed purchase. In case you don’t know where to start, our friends over at Pink Paradox have listed 6 things you need to check when deciding which pair to buy.

1. Are they right for your wedding?

One of the first things you need to check is whether the style of wedding shoe you’re looking at is a good match for your wedding. Wearing high heels or stilettos to a beach wedding, or worse, one in a field – is not the best idea. However great you are at walking in heels, there is no way of escaping the treacherous squishy sand or mud. You will sink. You will slide. You will not be elegant – a definite no-no.

Equally, sport-styled shoes are probably not the best option if your wedding will take place in an elegant and classic venue.

In simple terms, take into account the characteristics of your wedding so that the wedding shoes you choose are the best for you and the best for the location.

2. Are they right for you?

It is important to make sure that you feel comfortable and natural in your wedding shoes; in other words, to feel that they match your personal style. There’s no unwritten rule that demands you to wear stilettos on your big day and none that commands you to change into flats to dance all night. As a rule of thumb, avoid wearing shoes higher than you are used to, and, if you know that a certain style is particularly flattering, go for it!

With regards to the colour of your wedding shoes, remember that they don’t need to be white. An increasing number of brides love to let their personality shine through their shoes and opt for wedding shoes in bright hues that turn heads as they walk down the aisle.

3. Do your wedding shoes match with your dress?

Many brides prefer buying bridal shoes in the same fabric as their dress, while others opt for natural leather shoes as they consider them the top choice when it comes to comfort and longevity. There’s no absolute rule to follow here, just make sure that you have your shoes ready for your dress fittings. The fitter will need them to make sure that the length of your dress is just right, you most certainly don’t want to be trailing it along the floor – or tripping over it for that matter!

4. Would you like to wear them again?

If you plan to wear your bridal heels again, opt for an overall style that is elegant, classic and versatile, and that relates to the different clothes already in your wardrobe. Stilettos can be a great option if you attend cocktails or elegant events regularly while less high heels can be more versatile if you plan to wear them more regularly.

5. Are they comfortable? Really comfortable?

If there’s one condition that wedding shoes should 100% comply to, it is that of being comfortable. The classic problems that you should consider when purchasing your shoes, is to make sure that they do not pinch at the toe, rub on top, or squish the sides of your toes. This will lead to nasty blisters or corns, even within the time-scale of just a day! If your shoes are too narrow or wide, you will pay the price and most likely end up having to take them off – not the most elegant look!

The best piece of advice to be given is to purchase your wedding shoes by the end of the day and not early in the morning. This will give you a better sense of what your shoes may feel like on your wedding day as you’ll have been up and on your feet for several hours, which will account for any natural swelling that may take place. On the contrary, if you go shoe shopping in the morning when your feet are fresh, it may be harder for you to notice if your shoes are too narrow.

6. 20 shades of white

Maybe you haven’t noticed, but not all white wedding shoes are the same shade – at all! If you’ll be getting married in a traditional white bridal dress and you’d like to wear white shoes, we always recommend getting a swatch from your dress shop to compare the shades.

Silk shoes are traditionally more of an off-white shade because they are a natural fabric whereas imported satin shoes are very bright white.
