Choose locally-grown, seasonal wedding flowers to add a magical touch to your autumn celebrations.

Your wedding flowers are a focal point of your day; they’ll accompany you down the aisle, take centre stage in the reception space and add to the overall style and feel of your day. When choosing your October flowers, it pays to keep the season in mind. Seasonal wedding flowers and floral centrepieces not only complement the stunning autumnal landscape – they’re budget-friendly too!

Seasonal picks and colour schemes

With autumn well on its way, we can say goodbye to summer brights and soft pastels as we embrace warmer colour palettes and bold blooms. Fiona Pickles, of Firenza Flora Design, advises couples to embrace the moody and deep colours of the season, mixing foliage and flowers for the ultimate autumn bouquet. “Deep autumnal hues don’t have to mean a dark colour scheme,” explains Fiona, “If you favour a neutral colour palette, stick to softer colours and include the occasional berry, cornflower or chocolate cosmos. This will add a bit of depth to the overall look,” she adds.

Emma Matthews, of The Flower Girls, recommends bold and brave colour choices for your autumn wedding flowers and bridal bouquet. “Burgundy and red shades add a dramatic touch to a pretty blush bouquet while orange and purple is another autumn favourite,” says Emma.

When it comes to your flower choices, Emma advises that couples stay seasonal. “Opt for autumn favourites like dahlias, available in the deepest burgundy colours, and hydrangeas,” says Emma. “Feel free to forage too – you can find some excellent bits and pieces here in autumn.”

Becci Hobbs, of Bijoux Floral Design, recommends a selection of popular autumn flowers for a textured, pretty look. “Roses, berries, carnations and rustic leaves, such as birch, are all popular in autumn. Ranunculus is another great choice for the season,” explains Becci. Beech is also ideal for use in buttonhole designs or for edging a small posy-style bouquet.

For the ultimate in autumn bouquets, Amy Bowley, of Bo Boutique, recommends a base of rich burgundy and marsala, with accents of burnt orange, soft coral and peach. “Your wedding flowers should be combined with textural foliage such as eucalyptus, olive branch, trailing jasmine and asparagus fern for a real sense of autumnal sumptuousness,” explains Amy. “Crab apples, artichokes and astilbe are a few other top flower picks for autumn,” she adds.

The finishing touches

Wild and rustic wedding bouquets still lead the way when it comes to autumn wedding flowers. To create the look, take advantage of varying textures and autumn’s offerings for something striking and sophisticated. “Twigs, berries, rosehips and fruits add a beautiful finishing touch to your autumn floral design,” says Fiona. “The wide bouquet design allows all the elements of your bouquet to really sing,” she adds.

For a touch of glamour, Adèle Brown, of Tin Can Floral, recommends a few metallic highlights. “Metallic spray can transform your wedding flowers,” she says. “Copper, in particular, is on trend this year and complements the popular shades of burgundy and purple.” Alternatively, why not team deep crimson with gold leaves and greenery for a look that’s luxe and modern.

The autumnal touches don’t stop at your wedding flowers. For a creation that’s bang on trend, why not ask your florist to add a seasonal finishing touch. “Opt for trailing silk ribbon tied to your bouquet or choose hessian and twine for a rustic-inspired affair,” says Becci.

Styling with autumn flowers

Your bouquets and buttonholes are just the beginning of your floral design. You’ll also want to think about wedding table decorations, wedding flower centrepieces and how you can use autumn blooms to accentuate your venue. For your wedding tables, why not create a stunning display from all things green and leafy? Greenery, combined with succulents and a pop of colour, is a great choice for rustic and woodland-inspired weddings. For something that oozes real autumnal flair, scatter your tabletops with natural oak leaves and horse chestnut fruits.

You needn’t stop at flowers and greenery. Nature’s harvest allows the autumn bride to take advantage of a multitude of other elements too. “Pheasant feathers, willow, wheat, and pine cones are all great additions to your floral design,” says Becci. Adèle also recommends pumpkins and twisted hazel stems, both of which can be incorporated into your floral centrepieces.
