Greg proposed to girlfriend Hilary while on holiday in the romantic Maldives. With the responsibility of looking after such a precious ring, Greg decided to pop the question sooner, rather than later, in fear of losing – or Hilary finding – the ring! “He couldn’t wait to give it away,” laughs Hilary.
The simple things
With a love of classic, simple wedding style, planning the whole day was easy. “I didn’t do any forward planning – no Pinterest board, no scrapbook and no magazines,” says Hilary. “We both love classic style, so it was really easy to decide on things,” she explains. In fact, the couple didn’t even have to research wedding venues. When Greg’s mum suggested the couple visit nearby Leez Priory, the couple were sold the moment they saw it. “Greg’s mum knew we’d love it and we did. We booked it right away – with a date just three months away!” laughs Hilary. “We loved the building, its history and the ceremony space. The grounds were spectacular too. It also had accommodation, which was important for us, as all my friends and family had to travel a long way from the Wirral.”
In keeping with their preferred classic style, the couple styled their venue in white. Rather than opting for fussy, or ultra-modern details and trends, they styled Leez Priory with candles and flowers, for a naturally pretty look. “We wanted to keep things low key and avoid being sucked into trends. Before you know it you’ve lost what it is that you originally intended – so we avoided things like wedding fairs and forums,” explains Hilary.
While keeping the overall wedding style simple, finding a simplistic gown proved to be tricky. “I really struggled to find something that fit with our day, but eventually found an evening gown-style wedding dress, designed by Jenny Packham,” says Hilary. “I knew it was ‘the one’ as soon as I tried It on. From the cut, to the way it moved as I walked – and it was so comfortable too,” she smiles. Hilary paired her dress with a diamond necklace, which she received from Greg on the morning of her wedding. Complementing the white colour scheme, Hilary’s bridesmaids wore an off-white short gown, from Ted Baker. “As my dress was quite simple, I also needed something simple for the girls – and this high street find was great,” explains Hilary.
An intimate affair
Hilary and Greg’s late summer wedding was all about celebrating with friends and family. The couple decided to splurge on an extra night at the venue, the night before the wedding, for all their guests. “It gave everyone chance to get to the venue, relax and enjoy the experience,” says Hilary. “I’m so glad we did it.”
The next day, the couple tied the knot in the tower, at Leez Priory, enjoying an intimate ceremony with their nearest and dearest. A drinks reception, out the in the beautiful courtyard, followed as guests enjoyed Pimms in the sun.
The wedding breakfast took place in the main building, where the couple enjoyed their favourite foods, all before returning outside for a bit of evening sun. “We’d hired a Stevie Wonder tribute band for the evening and they were able to play outside because the day had been so hot,” says Hilary. “It was really special, and we were able to enjoy our first dance under the stars to a song that really sums up our relationship.”
Hilary’s top tip:
“Remember that it’s your day. Do what’s important to you. Keep things in perspective and remember what the day is really about.”
