When it came to their wedding day, Gemma and Nick wanted a special venue that provided a rustic theme, while also providing everything they needed to make the day special.
The Perfect Venue
Finding the right venue was important to the success of Gemma and Nick's big day and after visiting a great deal of locations, they finally found what they were looking for in The Barn at Bury Court. "As soon as we walked through the entrance we knew it was our venue," says Gemma. "It was stunning and everything we envisaged for our day. We both wanted a barn wedding with gorgeous surroundings and it met so many of the other requirements we had as well. It was simply perfect."
A Personal Touch
Running a business that specialises in wedding favours and decorations, UK Wedding Favours, the happy couple knew that there would be certain expectations when it came to dressing the venue. "We wanted a vintage and rustic theme and I designed my wedding favours keeping everything in mind, then built in the venue decorations to match," explains Gemma. "Pretty much everything was provided or made by us. I had a lot of fun making everything and coming up with all the table decorations. My florist was a huge help too and came up with some lovely ideas for the fresh flowers. Decorating the venue was great fun, to the point that my bridesmaids had to drag me off to start getting ready."
Elegant Dresses and Colour Schemed Cravats
Gemma's dress search was relatively stress-free and she found a wonderfully elegant dress almost straight away. "I was so happy with the dress I chose; it was one of the first I tried on. It was an A-line cut, full-length dress, with lace over satin. It had lace sleeves and a rounded high neck in off-white. Nick wore a navy morning suit with a pink cravat that matched our mint and pink colour scheme."
The bridesmaids and flower girls' dresses stayed true to the colour scheme and the page boy way sharply turned out in a miniature version of the groomsmen's outfit. "I had two bridesmaids who wore minty green floor length dresses from a shop in Brighton. The two flower girls were in green dresses with pale pink lace covering the dress. They all looked amazing!"
Crowd Pleasing Catering
The food was a big hit at the wedding and was loved by the guests from canapés to the street food in the evening. "Jacaranda is the best catering I've come across, their food was absolutely to die for – everyone commented all day and for weeks after," says Gemma. "For the wedding breakfast, we had an antipasti starter, with a duo of duck for the main (which was amazing), and then a chocolate torte for pudding. Every mouthful was incredible and by far the best wedding food I've ever had."
Gemma and Nick had a fabulous day but a couple of moments will always be remembered fondly. "Our first dance was to ‘When you say nothing at all', but it was sung by one of my bridesmaids," smiles Gemma. "She pre-recorded it for us ahead of the big day. It was a wonderfully personal touch and something a little bit different."
The wedding also provided its fair share of comedy moments too. "In the run up to the wedding our friend's daughter, who is 4, had pretty much declared her love for my husband-to-be and reminded me of this every time I saw her," recalls Gemma. "When they asked if anyone objected to the marriage my instant reaction was to look for her amongst the guests, thankfully her Dad had his hand over her mouth making sure she couldn't say anything. It was an entertaining moment during the vows – one that helped to keep me from crying."
