Lisa and Mark’s dream wedding day was a wonderfully eclectic mix of vintage and fantasy, with a dash of superhero thrown in for good measure, that made it unforgettable and truly unique. The happy couple fell in love with Upwaltham Barns in West Sussex after a visit and thought it would make the perfect venue to celebrate their special day. It’s safe to say that they weren’t disappointed!
The Perfect Venue
After countless hours of trawling the internet and a number of visits to venues in the area, Lisa and Mark finally found Upwaltham Barns and knew it was the perfect place. “Our venue was amazing! It was so cute and beautiful; we knew immediately that we wanted it,” explains Lisa. “It was ideal as we could have the ceremony and the celebrations all in one place and the venue was so beautiful that we didn’t really have to do much to decorate it. The owners were so lovely and helped us out so much!”
Setting the Theme
The happy couple wanted to let their personality shine through on their big day and opted for a fun combination of themes to make their wedding truly individual. “On the tables, we had various vintage items which we collected from car boot sales and antique shops, such as old books, keys, magnifying glasses and vases filled with cute flowers” says Mark. “I made the confetti myself from pages of Alice in Wonderland. The table plan was hung from an iron mannequin that Mark had bought me for my birthday.
The wedding cake continued the bespoke theme further and was kindly crafted by a friend for Lisa and Mark’s big day. “We had cupcakes made by a friend of mine who also made a larger cake that we could cut. We had bespoke cake toppers, the groom had a superman outfit under his suit and the bride had on a pair of Ruby Slippers. We decorated the cake table with ‘M&L’ made from Superhero comics too!”
Dressed to impress
Lisa went for a wonderful vintage look for her wedding dress, which matched the decorations and suited her personality to a tee. “My dress was a little 1920s in look with a low cowl neck at the back which made it backless. It was finished in sequins and beads, “smiles Lisa. “I was looking for this type of dress as a traditional large dress isn’t really my style. I finished my outfit with a birdcage veil and an art deco inspired comb and Champagne-coloured shoes decorated with sequins and beads.
The groomsmen went for a classic and sophisticated look for the big day, with a slight twist. “The groom and best man wore three-piece, blue suits with pale pink ties, white shirts and brown shoes,” explains Lisa. “They both looked so smart and the outfits definitely matched well with my dress and the theme of the wedding.” Underneath the white shirts however, the groomsmen revealed their inner superhero with secret t-shirts that made for an excellent photo opportunity.
A Truly Unforgettable Day
With so many amazing moments throughout the day, it was hard to pick out any stand-out moments. From the fantastic food to the first dance to the True Blood theme tune; the day was a roaring success! For Lisa though, it was the speeches that will live long in the memory. “The speeches were amazing! My dad was so nervous but performed well,” smiles Lisa. “The best man speech was the funniest I have ever heard!”
Scour The Web and Keep It Real!
Lisa and Mark’s day was perfect for them. “If we could do it all again, we’d change nothing! We had an amazing day, it was so perfect in every way!”
So what advice do they have to pass on to brides organising their wedding? “I would say to make sure you keep true to yourselves,” explains Lisa. “It’s so easy to get caught up in lots of bits and wanting everything you see and before you know it, it’s all snowballed!”
“Also, I would recommend trawling the internet for bargains, every time I found something I loved, I would google the hell out of it until I got the cheapest price for it!”
