Supermarket Sweep – Wedding Cakes

Supermarket Wedding Cakes

Wedding cakes are a delicious but often pricey addition to a wedding day. We look at the best wedding cakes that supermarkets have to offer which could save you a small fortune!

A wedding cake is a quintessential part of your special day but multi-tiered, show stopping creations from a specialist cake maker can see you shelling out hundreds if not thousands of pounds. Most supermarket chains actually produce their own wedding cake ranges which could help you make big savings and still have that gorgeous cake to cut together. To top it off, if you're willing to do a little bit of the work yourself, you could grab yourself a bargain and decorate it to suit your big day.

Marks and Spencer's

M&S offer an incredible selection of wedding cakes for you to choose from. From their traditional range to exquisitely decorated fruit and sponge cakes, they offer a great choice that will all save you money compared to a bespoke option. A classic three-tiered undecorated fruit cake that serves up to 70 will only set you back £74 and a sponge equivalent would be even less. Why not decorate it with some fresh flowers or fruit for a great summer look and add some colour to match your colour scheme.

If you're looking to save time and want a ready-decorated option instead, there's a great deal to choose from. We love the Shimmering Hoop Chocolate Wedding Cake which looks amazing and is a fantastic price for a four-tiered masterpiece.

Waitrose

Waitrose has teamed up with luxury cake maker Fiona Cairns to offer a number of mouth-watering wedding cakes that help you save a few pounds on your big day. Choose from a rich undecorated three-tiered fruit cake that serves up to 110 people for £225, a towering pink and white polka dot creation with alternate sponge and fruit layers, or a delightful three-tiered ivory sponge cake carefully decorated with sugar paste roses and petals. With these and loads more available between £59 and £349, you're guaranteed to find a top quality wedding cake at a supermarket price.

Tesco

While not offering the range of choice that M&S and Waitrose do, Tesco can still provide a few different options for a supermarket wedding cake, and at a good price too. With a bit of self-assembly, you can have a two-tier hand finished sponge cake that serves up to 74 for £60. It's perfect for those looking to decorate a cake in their own style and still gives your guests something that tastes great. Tesco even offers gluten free options of both their fruit and sponge cakes so more people can enjoy your wedding cake.

Our Top Tips for Saving a Bit Extra

So far we've managed to whittle the price of your wedding cake down quite substantially, but there are a couple of ways where you can save even more!

Cutting bar cakes are a much cheaper way to ensure that you can have your cake and eat it too. Buy a couple of these in and take a tier out of your wedding cake to save a bit more money. A cutting bar cake at M&S will cost £14-£16 and serve 22 people whereas a tiered option for roughly the same amount of people will cost £10 more. It's simple really!
