Let’s start at the beginning here… just what IS a naked cake?
Basically, it’s a cake without its coat on, a cake minus the outer layer of icing, with the layers of sponge exposed for all to see. Naked cakes became popular a few years ago and this popularity has grown ever since, with designs becoming more elaborate and exciting with each passing season.
Today we’re going to take a look at a few of our favourite designs, from the classic naked cake adorned with fresh berries or blooms to some more contemporary styles.
This is how it begins, a beautiful tiered sponge with layers of jam and buttercream, dusted with icing sugar and adorned with ivy and fresh flowers. It’s pretty, simple and just perfect for a wedding.

While the naked cake is often associated with a less formal style of wedding, the addition of fresh flowers and a lavish silver cake stand soon gives it a glamorous edge. Sometimes all you need to do is change a small detail such as the stand, and the cake takes on a completely new look.

Of course the naked cake can adopt new style depending on the cake flavour. Here, red velvet cakes result in a romantic red cake.

Small naked cakes are a lovely accompaniment to a dessert table. Dot these around the table with other delicious creations for a mouthwatering afternoon tea.

If you’re pushing the boat out, serve individual cakes. We love these miniature naked cakes, with a pretty rose for every guest. Served at each place setting, they double up as a favour.

If you’re going boho… this couldn’t be better. The addition of fresh rosemary and lavender is dreamy, and we love the wooden crate stand which presents the cake so well.

The semi-naked cake is taking the wedding world by storm. Sitting somewhere between the naked cake and a more traditional iced cake, these tiers have just a thin layer of icing, giving them a smooth finish but still keeping the filling on show.

This design appeals to every sweet-tooth out there. The caramel drizzle down the sides of the naked cake is simply scrumptious!

Of course, the naked cake shows off the filling of the cake, so think outside the box and make yours fun. We love this design, with a sponge filled with sprinkles.

Who says naked can’t be glamorous? Here, we see a gold leaf base tear, with two semi-naked top tiers. Roses and orchids complete this most contemporary of cakes.

And finally… just because we love it. Go a little topsy-turvy with fresh flowers filling the gaps between the tiers. You’ll need a talented cake designer, and a very steady table!
