Without meaning to state the obvious… yellow is a wonderfully sunny colour to incorporate in to your wedding colour scheme. Bright yellow is brave and bold, while calmer, pastel shades of buttercream and soft lemon are gentle and pretty.

You may be unlikely to choose a yellow wedding dress, but it’s a fabulous choice for details from flowers to bridesmaid dresses or shoes. And, of course, a cake adorned with yellow blooms or tied with a yellow ribbon is the prettiest addition to any wedding day. Today, we take a look at a few of our favourite cake designs, all with this sunny colour in common.

Let’s start with ‘all out yellow’ and a design with delicate yellow icing. This base shade needs little other adornment and looks pretty as a picture with elegant polka dot icing, ivory ribbon and some fresh flowers.

Yellow makes us think of daisies, and daisies make adorable sugar flowers. We love this stacked design with sugar daisies cascading down the tiers. For the filling, how about a delicious lemon sponge?

Sticking with the daisy theme and the yellow backdrop, this design takes a bold turn with the introduction of green to the nature theme. It’s the perfect choice for a summer wedding in the great outdoors – use daisies as your theme throughout the day and keep your styling informal and summery.

If you’d prefer to ice your cake in white, turn the colours around and choose yellow polka dots instead. This cake shows just how pretty yellow can be, with a blowsy sugar flower quite literally ‘the icing on the cake’.

For the ultimate in elegance, choose a traditional white, tiered cake and decorate with beautiful fresh flowers in hues of yellow. Textured icing adds interest and a hint of contemporary style to this most stylish design.

We still love ombré and this cake demonstrates it so beautifully. Always start with your colour on the bottom tier, gradually becoming paler as you move up the cake to a pristine white top tier.

Simplicity and elegance again, but this time adopting an alternative to the more traditional fresh flower decoration. This cake is covered in buttercream instead of royal icing, with splashes of colour introduced in the form of lemons and lavender. It’s a dreamy choice for an outdoor wedding.

Yellow doesn’t have to be loud and bright. This ‘Briar Rose’ wedding cake by Rosalind Miller Cakes offers just a hint of yellow in the centre of each meticulous sugar flower. Breathtaking.

Yellow combines harmoniously with various other colours. Here we see it working beautifully with pink, bringing out the pink and yellow from the magnificent peony.

Grey and yellow also work well together, the yellow blooms lifting this elegant cake with a splash of colour.

When planning a cake in pastel shades, be sure to introduce yellow flowers. These blue tiers look exceptionally pretty with the addition of cascading sugar roses, so delicately created in natural shades including yellow.

And finally… we’ve saved our favourite until last. If you’re looking for a show-stopper, this is undoubtedly it. The ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Rosalind Miller Cakes features tiers of yellow buttercream decorated with the most stunning arrangement of sugar flowers. This is a cake to display for all to see… but you might never want to cut it!
