Wedding Invitation Wording – Save the Date Cards

Wedding Invitation Wording – Save the Date Cards | CHWV

Save the date cards are the perfect way to announce your wedding day to the world, but what exactly do they need to say? We take a closer look.

When it comes to your wedding invitations and stationery, it's all about timing and clarity. It's easy enough to make them look nice, but these pretty pieces of card need to serve a purpose too. So how are you supposed to know what to write? Well, fear not! We are here to help. This time, we're focusing on writing save the date cards and giving our top tips on what they need to say, as well giving you a few ideas on how to make them suit your own individual style.

Why send a save the date card?

First, let's just clarify the purpose of these little cards. They're basically an early warning to your friends and family that you've set a certain date and would love them to attend, and that is pretty much it! Once received, your guests will then know to put the date in their diaries and start making the necessary arrangements such as taking time off work, planning transportation, and booking accommodation. Giving a nice early "heads up" to your nearest and dearest means they're less likely to be busy doing anything else!

What they need to know

Your save the date cards only really need to cover the basics, which is perfect as you might not have finalised all the finer points of your wedding day by the time these cards are being posted out. As a general rule, your save the date card should include:

The message: Save the date
The date: 14/6/16
For the wedding of
Your names: Miss X and Mr Y
in
Location: Curradine Barns, Worcestershire
Invitation to follow

Simple, right? At this stage, you don't even have to include the name of your actual wedding venue, although if you've already booked it then it doesn't hurt to pop it in. The last line is purely there to ensure that there's no confusion over what your guests have received and that they can expect a formal invitation with all the rest of the information on it closer to the time.

Finding your style

You might want to play with the save the date card wording a little to match the personality and the style of your wedding. For example, a grand and traditional wedding in a stately manor house or castle venue may call for a higher level of formality than that of a rustic and relaxed barn wedding.

For a simplistic style and calm approach, this save the date is nice and concise:
