Wedding Planning Tips: Where to Start Now I'm Engaged?

Where to Start Now I'm Engaged? | CHWV

We tell you everything you need to do in the first couple of months after the question is popped.

Congratulations! You’re engaged! We promise you’re in for an exciting and unforgettable adventure - but you needn’t begin wedding planning right away. Before starting on that wedding checklist, why not enjoy being engaged? After all, it doesn’t happen every day. When it comes to planning, you needn’t jump right into it either – just follow our simple steps on how to plan a wedding in those first few months.

1. Share the news

If there’s one thing that’s totally OK to shout about it’s your engagement. Call friends and family, make it Facebook official and why not even make a bride-to-be Instagram account? It’s also the perfect excuse for a party – the first of several in the run up to your day.

2. Take some time to soak it all in

We get it – you want to start trying on wedding dresses right away and secure your venue well ahead of your dream day. But first, take a break. Enjoy being engaged and don’t feel you have to rush into planning right away. Take some time to soak up the excitement and show off your sparkler before wedding mayhem begins.

3. Dream up a list of wedding wishes

No doubt you’ll already know exactly what you want from your wedding – and you have done since the age of five – but once you’re ready to plan, begin jotting things down. Think about the style of wedding you want, the number of guests you’ll be inviting, and where in the world you want to get married. It may even be worth making a wedding checklist and timetabling everything. It may be the first time in your life you’ll find timetabling fun!

4. Decide on a budget

Although you might not want to talk about it, deciding on your budget early on is a must. Sit down with your partner-to-be – and perhaps both of your families – to figure out how much the two of you can afford and if your parents will be able to contribute at all. Once you’ve got a figure, wedding planning becomes so easy – it’s just about sticking to your numbers.

5. Take out insurance

When you’re carrying around as much bling as you are on your ring finger, you want to make sure you get insurance! Your wedding insurance should also cover all of your other big-day elements and taken out before booking anything.

6. Decide on potential wedding dates and start looking for a venue

Dreaming of a cosy, festive affair in a grand manor house or a boho-style garden wedding? What you want from your day will impact the season and venue you choose for your wedding. While it’s a good idea to have a season or month in mind, don’t get too hung up on a particular date. Flexibility is key. You can also use our Venue Finder to narrow down venues in your preferred area by style and amenities.

7. Book your venue… followed by the photographer

One of the most exciting parts of the process (apart of getting engaged of course!) is securing your wedding date at your chosen venue. You’re officially getting married and all that’s left to do is plan and enjoy being a bride-to-be. Booking your venue means one major element of wedding planning is sorted - but it should be followed by your photographer, a priority supplier you should book up as soon as you can. After both of these bookings, put your feet up and relax for a bit…

8. Pin your perfect wedding

Ahh Pinterest; an inspirational haven for brides-to-be. What on earth did we do without it? Spend lazy weekends dreaming about your perfect day and swooning over gorgeous wedding imagery. Create boards for your décor and boards for your big-day style – you can never have too much inspiration.
