Artificial Wedding Flowers

Let’s start our look at all things artificial in the company of Jason and Sarah Read from the multi-award winning Sarah’s Flowers. Jason and Sarah know everything there is to know about using silk flowers at weddings and here’s their advice:

“There are a few main reasons why couples choose artificial flowers. Firstly, silk wedding flowers can be kept as a reminder of the day and they make a lovely keepsake. Some couples choose artificial flowers because one or several members of the bridal party are allergic to fresh flowers and others choose our flowers because they travel extremely well. You can just pop them in your suitcase and take them with you!”

“You can also order months, or even years in advance which helps to spread the cost and once you’ve ordered, you can just store your flowers and there’s nothing to worry about. You can also test your decorations before the big day which is a great advantage.”

Choosing Artificial Wedding Flowers

There’s also no reason why you can’t include both silk and real flowers in your wedding. Jason and Sarah advise not to mix artificial flowers and fresh in the same arrangement but you can have a real bouquet and artificial table arrangements or vice-versa. When it comes to buying your artificial flowers, Jason and Sarah say there are a few things to look for:

“Definitely look for quality. Are the flower petals frayed at the edges? Might the colours bleed? Darker colours can stain a wedding dress if the flowers aren’t colourfast. Also, check how the stems are finished. All artificial wedding flowers have wires running through the stems and these can snag and catch on wedding dresses. Make sure your stems are at least covered with tape or ideally wrapped with a ribbon.”

Alternative Wedding Flowers

Although silk flowers might still be the most popular artificial flowers around, we’re seeing more and more alternatives right now. Paper flowers are increasingly popular and Rebecca from Paper Bouquets is here to tell us more:

“I think brides choose paper flowers because of their versatility. Paper Bouquets has over 20 different styles from traditional roses to quirky origami versions. They can be made to suit any theme or style of venue and I can use sheet music, maps, book pages – the choices are never-ending!”

“Paper flowers are also very durable and they can be kept for ever. Unlike real flowers, you don’t have to have them professionally preserved which is an additional cost so they’re practical for the budget savvy bride too. If you look after them, paper flowers can last a lifetime.”

“If you’re looking to use paper flowers, always work with a reputable designer and do your research. Also, a good designer will have a waiting list so make sure you give them plenty of notice. If you want to mix paper and real flowers, I can supply individual stems in advance so you can share them with your florist when the big day comes.”
