Becky and Peter were looking for a picturesque wedding venue in West Sussex which they could personalise and make their own for their special day. The found the perfect setting in Bartholomew Barn; an idyllic country barn in a delightful rural location.
"We were always looking for a rustic countryside wedding venue, and when we visited Bartholomew Barn we fell in love with it," says Becky. "It was smaller and more intimate than other venues we'd visited, which was perfect for us as we wanted a relatively small wedding, and was situated in the most beautiful rural setting. We really liked that we weren't tied to any specific vendors for any aspect of the day so we could make it completely our own, and that the barn only hosts one wedding per week so we would have plenty of time to set up the day before."
Styling the venue
The happy couple loved the rustic country décor of this barn wedding venue in West Sussex, so decided to work with it when it came to adding decorations. They also made sure their guests would have plenty of fun throughout the day.
"We decorated the fencing around the front lawn with white bunting and fairy lights and hung lanterns of different sizes from the beams inside the barn as well as a homemade map of our honeymoon. We had hessian table runners and cutlery holders and made centrepieces from slices of tree trunk, jam jars and candles. For the wedding favours, we gave our guests a selection of homemade jams, chutneys and cordials which went down a treat! To keep everyone entertained during the drinks reception, we filled the lawn with garden games and hay bales for seating which gave the whole day a relaxed feel."
Dressed to impress
Becky had an idea of the type of wedding dress she was looking for, but ended up with something completely different instead!
"My dress was an ivory lace dress bought from the Serenity collection at the Amaryllis Bridal Boutique. It was strapless, with an A-line shape leading to a train at the end. I liked that the dress was elegant and simple, but with some subtle details too. I found Amaryllis Bridal Boutique by looking at the styles of different bridal boutiques online, and when I got to the shop fell in love with my dress even though it wasn't at all what I was looking for!"
Peter looked sharp on the day too, wearing a navy blue morning suit complete with a white waistcoat, cravat and matching pocket square, all from Moss Bros.
Becky's bridesmaids wore floor-length teal dresses which worked perfectly with the pastel colour scheme of the day. They finished their look with simple silver earrings and necklaces.
The order of the day
Becky and Peter had glorious sunshine for their summer wedding at Bartholomew Barn, which meant they could tie the knot out in the peaceful courtyard. The ceremony was made even more special by readings from the maid of honour and Peter's grandfather. They celebrated with a drinks reception of Prosecco and a range of infused gins with tonic followed by a spot of cricket on the lawn, before moving into the barn for a wedding breakfast to remember. The couple catered to all different tastes but the lamb shank main course and summery trio of desserts went down best of all! After kicking the off the evening celebrations with a first dance to ‘How Long Will I Love You' by Jon Boden, Becky and Peter danced the night away with their guests at this exquisite barn wedding venue.
The happy couple had no regrets whatsoever on their wedding day at Bartholomew Barn, and a few moments will certainly stay with them for a lifetime.
"Saying ‘I do' during the ceremony is something that I will never forget," says Becky. "That and doing a photoshoot while playing cricket with my husband, bridesmaids and groomsmen!"
If there was any advice that Becky could pass on it would be this:
"If you're trying to cut down the wedding budget, save money by doing as much as you can yourself. Also, if you want to have a smaller wedding then go for it. We loved being able to spend time with all of our guests!"
