With hearts set on an unforgettable celebration surrounded by all their friends and family, Karen and Martin went in search of the perfect venue to host their special day. They found just what they were looking for in Bassmead Manor Barns, an atmospheric barn wedding venue in Cambridgeshire.
“We do not live near Cambridge, but Martin took me on a romantic weekend there and we fell in love with the place,” says Karen. “Bassmead is truly idyllic and made my dream of a rustic barn wedding come true!”
Styling the venue
The happy couple decided upon a shabby-chic theme to the day and complemented it with a colour scheme of silver, purple and lilac for a summery feel. Karen conjured up a great deal of decorations herself and, like many brides, now has a serious Pinterest addiction!
“I spent months and months doing my research,” says Karen. “Pinterest is literally my favourite website ever!”
“We had vintage step ladders with decorations, shabby-chic easels for pictures and a beautiful mirror which set out my seating plan with lilac and silver foliage. We hung little glass lanterns full of flowers at the entrance and lined the aisle in the Rickety Barn with larger lanterns and white roses. We also dotted black and white photos of us around the venue so our guests got a feel of our past and future.”
Possibly the most amazing feature was the couple’s four-tiered suspended wedding cake, adorned with stunning roses and foliage. It certainly wowed their guests!
Dressed to impress
When it came to finding the perfect dress, Karen had a clear idea of what she wanted. That changed when she laid eyes on one particular gown, however!
“I had always imagined a plain yet elegant dress for the big day as I’m not really into lace, but when I saw a stunning backless gown by Pronovias, I knew it was the one!” says Karen. “It fitted my figure wonderfully and had delicate lace detail over sheer tulle and long train. I added a cathedral train also from Pronovias and ivory Louboutin shoes to complete the look.”
A day to remember
Karen and Martin began their journey into married life together by tying the knot in The Rickety Barn, a breathtaking rustic setting of exposed timbers and wrought iron chandeliers. They celebrated with a drinks reception and mouth-watering canapés. Their guests were treated to Kir Royal, Pimm’s and mojitos, as well as big drums of beer and a saxophonist to enjoy in the sun!
The contemporary Bridge Barn was the setting for the wedding breakfast, a spectacular feast created by the expert catering team Galloping Gourmet. With tomato soup to start, beef fillet and Scotch blade with dauphinoise potato for the main course and a delightful trio of desserts, everybody was suitably satisfied by the end!
The happy couple then danced the night away with their nearest and dearest before jetting off on honeymoon the very next day.
Karen and Martin loved every aspect of their special day, but a couple of moments really stood out for the bride.
“I think walking into the Rickety Barn and seeing my husband-to-be was the highlight for me. I was so nervous but I knew I was saying ‘I do’ to the man of my dreams and doing it in front of everyone I cared about.”
“I also loved the speeches. My dad is not a big speaker and I know at my sister’s wedding he got so nervous he fainted so I was a little worried, but his speech was really good and it certainly brought a tear to my eye.”
Words of advice
If Karen could pass on any tips to future brides and grooms it would be these:
Your planning probably won’t be without stress, tears and arguments and can sometimes feel like a lot of hard work! Take time throughout the day to step back and think about the effort you put in and how perfect your wedding is; it will all feel worth it.
We made so many memories that day and I will never forget them!”
