Richard and Zoe had their hearts set on a beautiful country venue with a relaxed atmosphere in which to celebrate their special day, and they found the perfect place in Upton Barn. This award-winning wedding venue in Devon met all the requirements and made it possible for the couple to have the wedding they had dreamed of.
"Richard and I both had our hearts set on getting married in a rustic barn somewhere in Devon," says Zoe. "We visited a Wedding Fair in Exeter looking for some inspiration when we stumbled across a stand for Upton Barn. We instantly fell in love with the owners, Claire and Richard, and the proposed look of the Barn, which was still being renovated. I remember visiting the barn for the first time, Richard and I just looked at each other, and we knew straight away that this was the perfect venue for us."
Dressing the venue
The couple were drawn in by the rustic beauty of Upton Barn so didn't feel that they really needed to add very much decoration at all, preferring to let the charm of the barns and gardens shine. They did incorporate a few elements, along with their dusky pink colour scheme which perfectly suited their surroundings and their spring wedding date.
"We hired beautiful long, bright white fairy lights which were draped across the ceiling of the main barn, hanging from the rafters," explains Zoe "They looked so amazing both in the day and the evening.
I also turned a very old step ladder into a ‘love ladder table plan', with hessian string and pegs to hold the table plans which were printed on rustic brown card. We finished it all off with flowers and candles, and I was so happy with the end result!"
Looking the part
When it came to picking out the perfect dress, Zoe had a little dilemma on her hands, balancing out her love for a bit of bling with the laid back style of the venue!
"After spending a very long time looking and trying on a variety of styles, I eventually bought my dress from the Bridal Corner in Plymouth," explains Zoe. "It is from the Mon Cheri Collection by David Tutera. I didn't want anything too ‘princessy' as our day was going to be a relaxed one, but I still wanted some lace and sparkle. My dress fitted the brief perfectly without feeling like it was too much."
The beautiful bride combined her dress with wonderful necklace and earring set, a mid-length veil, a custom made bracelet by Billie & Blossom, and an incredibly comfortable pair of shoes by Rainbow Club.
Richard brought a bit of colour to his attire with a royal blue tailored three-piece suit by Ted Baker, crisp white shirt and blush pink tie to match the colour scheme. The bridesmaids were on-trend too with dusky pink dresses with a bit of sparkle around the waist.
The most amazing day
One of the main attractions of this wonderful wedding venue in Devon is the outdoor ceremony option in the idyllic gardens, and Zoe and Richard were lucky enough with the weather to be able to take full advantage and tie the knot al fresco. After the ceremony, they kept the part outside with a delightful drinks reception in the sun, while taking in their exquisite surroundings.
Instead of your usual three-course wedding breakfast fare, the happy couple kept the laid-back vibe going with a mouth-watering afternoon tea, served in the beautiful Cider Barn. With plenty of sandwiches, scones and sweet treats on offer, it all went down a storm! In the evening, they enjoyed a hearty barbecue with their guests before dancing the night away at this exquisite wedding venue in Devon.
Zoe and Richard's wedding day was a huge success, but the weather played a big part in making it even better.
"The sun coming out half an hour before the ceremony began, which meant we were able to get married outside in the beautiful walled garden, was definitely a stand out moment for us both!" smiles Zoe. "We had our heart set on an outdoor wedding and we're so glad we could do it."
If Zoe could pass on any advice for soon-to-be-brides, it would be this:
"Try not to rush into things, take your time and shop around a bit. You want everything to be perfect on the day so decisions should not be rushed into."
"Don't let other's opinions take over and influence what you ultimately want. Never feel pressured into trying to please everyone, it will make even the simplest of tasks seem stressful. While it is nice that others want to take an interest and help, remember it is not their wedding day, it is yours."
