Pre-war wedding style

The period before World War II can best be summed up in one word – glamour. The 1920s saw the rise of the Art Deco movement plus hemlines were on the rise. Shapes of dresses also changed hugely in this period too as women said goodbye to restrictive corsets and hello to looser styles with dropped waists and embellished styles.

The 1930s moved wedding trends on again and this era was absolutely inspired by the decadence of the Jazz age and the pure glamour of Old Hollywood. Think of the sleekest, silk and satin gowns, backless gowns cut on the bias and long beaded dresses with trains. Brides wore long veils and always wore their best sparkling accessories.

1940s

World War II definitely bought a sudden end to this beautiful and sophisticated era. Thanks to severe rationing, wedding dresses had to go. Lots of brides simply wore their military uniforms or pre-war evening clothes. More creative types used parachute silk or curtain material to fashion themselves a wedding dress or totally re-purposed older clothes and even petticoats to make their gown.

Wedding trends of 1950s & 1960s

With the war over and clothes rationing at an end, there was definitely a rebellion in fashion. Dior’s ‘New Look’ with voluminous skirts, pockets and nipped in waists was a major influence in early 1950s fashion and brides followed suit. Wedding dresses were made from a whole range of luxurious materials that simply hadn’t been available in the previous decade. If there’s one wedding that typifies the wedding style of this period, it has to be that of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco. The dress that she wore for her 1956 wedding has gone down in history and is quite rightly still adored today.

The arrival of the Swinging Sixties saw another change in wedding dress style and, just like in the 1920s, skirts got shorter. Full skirted tea-length gowns were popular in the early part of this decades whilst by the time the Sixties draw to a close, mini skirt wedding dresses were being seen, particularly at cool London registry office weddings.

Wedding style from the seventies onwards…

The Seventies was most certainly the era for the boho bride. Long flowing gowns with shawl and gypsy necklines were all the rage. Brides often wore wide brimmed floppy hats instead of veils and lots of gowns came with long bell sleeves and high necklines.

1980s

Of course the 80s was the era of ‘The Meringue’. Dresses were bigger than ever with huge skirts and long trains. The dress worn by Lady Diana on her wedding day is the one that we all think of first of all when looking back to 80s wedding style. Made of antique lace and ivory silk taffeta, it came with a 25ft train. After this wedding, large puffed sleeves and full skirts were seen in every bridal designer’s collections.

1990s

The late 1990s saw strapless dresses become popular and this look continued into the new millennium. Lace up backs, A-line skirts, embellished bodices and were worn by thousands of women but eventually, this wedding trend gave way to the huge variety of dresses we see now, some inspired by vintage eras and some that take bridal fashion in a whole new direction. Who knows where it will go next?
