Finding the right wedding band or DJ is key when it comes to entertaining all your friends and family. If your idea of a good time is dancing the night away to some amazing tunes then make sure you read this first! Ask your wedding band or DJ these ten questions before you book and it’ll help you find the perfect act to bring your reception to life.
1. What’s your style?
Some musicians and DJs will specialise in a particular genre of music while others cater for a broader range of tastes. Make sure your wedding band play your kind of music before going any further.

2. Have you been to our venue before?
While it’s not imperative that your entertainment has played at a venue before, it can be somewhat beneficial if they have. It means they know where it is, where to set up and whether the setting has any sound limiters or electrical restrictions that they need to know about.

3. Is there any way we can see you live before we book?
While you can’t really go barging into other couples’ weddings, band and DJs will often have recordings of them performing that you can watch in advance. Check out their website or ask them if they can send you anything.
4. Will you be able to play our first dance song or any special requests?
This won’t be as much of an issue for DJs who most of the time won’t mind the odd request (particularly if it’s done in advance). Some wedding bands may be willing to learn your first dance song for you and might even let you pick a setlist from their repertoire for your night. Every band is different however!

5. How many of you will be there on the day?
It’s good to know exactly what you’re going to get on the day so find out the numbers in advance. It’s particularly important if you’re going to be feeding them too!

6. What time will you arrive/ do you need time to set up?
Most bands and DJs will need around an hour to set up so you’ll need to give them an idea of when you’ll be finishing your wedding breakfast. If your evening reception is in a separate space to your wedding breakfast it will allow the musicians more freedom for setting up and sound-checking.
7. Will we need to hire any equipment?
Most bands will have all the equipment that they might need but if you’re are wanting them to do anything different you might have to arrange to hire in specific items.

8. What are your fees?
Most of the time, wedding bands and DJs will offer different packages with differing so you can find exactly what you’re looking for. Whether you want accompaniment all through the day or just a few hours of music at night, most musicians will be able to provide a cost for what you want.
9. What happens in between your sets?
This isn’t so much of an issue with a DJ but bands will likely take a break or two during the night. No one wants a gap in the music so ask whether they will have recorded music to play while they are offstage.
10. Do you take care of the lighting/ special effects too?
Again, DJs and wedding bands will most likely have lighting and other effects with them but if you’re looking for something a bit more out there, you may have to arrange the hire for yourself!
