We spoke to Andy Gotting, Head Chef of the renowned catering company, Galloping Gourmet, to find out what ten things you should ask your wedding caterer to make sure you have the most amazing food and drink for your big day.

1. What does the price include?

All caterers quote differently, so it’s vital to find out what the price includes when comparing companies. Some caterers will include staff, crockery, cutlery, glassware, linen and kitchen equipment in their package while others may charge separately. Also, find out any costs associated with drinks service throughout the day as these can vary too. Lastly, be aware of whether VAT is included in the price.

2. Will you be doing other weddings that day?

The answer should be no if you’ve booked an exclusive use wedding venue! If not, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. If the caterer has other bookings, it is likely to be a sign they are a popular and successful company. However, you should feel confident they can properly manage their workload and insist on having a dedicated events manager when you make your booking.

3. Can I see sample menus?

It’s essential to understand the ethos at the heart of the cuisine each caterer provides. A team that specialises in superb modern British cuisine may not be the best choice if you’re looking for Pan-Asian fare. Take a look at their menus and choose a company that understands the type of food you want for your day.

4. Can I do something different?

Most couples want to put their own stamp on their wedding and make it personal to them and there’s no reason why this can’t extend to the food served on the day. An innovative Chef will welcome your ideas and help make them work.

5. Do you have photos of your food?

Ask for a selection of images to get an impression of how they present their food. Don’t get too hung up on one particular dish as you’d be better off getting an overall impression. Also, ask to see photos of the service team in action – do the staff look smart and professional?

6. What’s your staff dress code?

Check that the company has firm rules on uniform, even if you’ve seen photos. This will ensure you and your guests are just as impressed with the service on your big day as you are with the food.

7. Can we try the food before the wedding?

Any caterer worth their salt will want you to try their food. A great way to find out what the food will be like on the wedding day is to attend an exhibition event rather than having a particular meal cooked for just the two of you. Sampling the food in surroundings similar to your wedding venue will allow you to see the service team at work, which is just as important as tasting the food.

8. Will we have any help?

Your wedding meal is much more than the service on the day. Your suppliers will need to fit into your arrangements. Ideally, you’ll have an experienced member of the catering team to help you with the planning process and help you make the best value decisions.

9. What about drinks?

Most caterers can provide an alcohol package and it is worth checking what they have on offer. Some venues may allow you to provide your own drinks, which you can arrange for your caterers to serve. However, it may not always be the cheaper option.

10. How much support will we have on the day?

You’ll need a Front of House manager and service staff to make sure everything runs like clockwork so you can relax and enjoy your day. Meet them before your wedding to run through your plans and discuss timings.
