2019 wedding dress trends

One of the biggest trends for 2019 is a return to elegance and simplicity. Lots of commentators and experts have dubbed this ‘The Meghan Effect’ and there’s no doubt that the Royal weddings of 2018 have influenced this trend.

So, we’ll see gowns with a little more structure than of late. Perfectly fitted bodices, boat necks and sleeves will be everywhere and skirts will be slightly fuller too. When it comes to fabrics, lots of designers have chosen heavier fabrics, including Mikado, to give shape and movement to skirts.

Meghan has also had another influence on 2019 wedding dress trends because we’re seeing a return to the fuller ball gown after years of slimmer designs taking pride of place on the catwalks. Fuller skirts, particularly those with pockets, are so flattering and are perfect for country house weddings.

Meghan’s evening dress has also influenced 2019 wedding dresses. Elements from her slinky halterneck gown have been seen in collections and again, plainer fabrics have been used to complement fabulous design and fit. These are a really grown-up alternative to strapless gowns and they provide more support and coverage too.

Finally, on the subject of necklines, it’s clear that higher necklines are also in lots of collections of 2019 wedding dresses. Turtlenecks are totally gorgeous and work in lace or in heavier fabrics.

We’ve been mentioning coloured wedding dresses for a while and for 2019, soft colours are in lots of designer collections, including Vera Wang. Blue seems to be the shade of choice for many designers and we can’t think of a better ‘something blue’ than these beautiful wedding dresses.

If you’d prefer something a little bolder, particularly for winter weddings, metallics are still on trend. However, you don’t need a fully metallic gown. Designers such as Hayley Paige have included overlays with delicate metallic touches that are a really sophisticated option for bold metallic gowns.

Embellishments are still big news in wedding dress design for 2019 but there will be fewer sparkling details than in previous years. Instead, larger 3d details were everywhere, most frequently floral in style. This details are also being used to change the look from lace from super sweet to brave and fierce.

Finally, the wedding dress detail that doesn’t seem to be doing anywhere is the bow. Statement bows were seen in lots of collections and it seems that the phrase of the year is ‘the bigger the better’! Big bows on the waist are so flattering and we’re sure we’ll see lots of these on gorgeous 2019 wedding dresses.

When it comes to accessories, veils have been becoming more popular for a while and this is definitely going to continue in 2019. However, if you’d like to switch things up a little, opt for a capelet instead and keep it sheer. These super short capes look amazing with off-the-shoulder and strapless gowns and create a really feminine look.
